JANDS NZ deploys JBL, BSS and AKG solutions to create a versatile networked audio system for a wide range of events and speaking engagements
WELLINGTON, New Zealand— JANDS NZ recently installed a networked audio system by HARMAN Professional Solutions at the Australian High Commission facility in Wellington, New Zealand.
The Australian High Commission (AHC) acts as the Australian government’s official agency in New Zealand. In addition to providing a range of diplomatic services to the public, including passport, immigration, citizenship and cultural relations, the AHC also represents Australia’s interests to government and business organizations in New Zealand.
A dedicated event space in the facility allows the AHC to host numerous events and meetings throughout the year. The AHC event space consists of four individual rooms that can accommodate multiple events simultaneously, or be combined for large events. In order to ensure maximum intelligibility, versatility and ease-of-use during a wide range of events, the AHC hired Audio Workshop and JANDS NZ to upgrade their aging sound system with a complete HARMAN Professional Solutions networked audio system made up of JBL, BSS and AKG solutions.
“We asked Matt Chapman of Audio Workshop to provide a full analysis of our previous system, and recommend solutions to optimize the audio quality with a true world-class system,” said Jonathan Pawley, AV & IT Manager, Australian High Commission. “We’re very happy with the new HARMAN system, which JANDS NZ installed to Matt’s specifications—it exceeded all of our expectations.”
Audio Workshop and JANDS NZ relied on a selection of JBL speakers to ensure optimum coverage and clarity in the AHC event space. JBL CBT 70J-1 column speakers provide consistent coverage while minimizing room reflections and reverberation from the atrium’s high ceilings. JBL Control 16C/T in-ceiling loudspeakers deliver premium speech intelligibility and high quality music playback in four meeting rooms, while Control 29AV-1 speakers offer additional power and directivity for film and video presentations. In order to ensure maximum reliability, speech intelligibility and system flexibility, also while minimizing signal dropouts during events, Audio Workshop specified a multi-channel AKG WMS470 wireless microphone system.
The entire system is controlled by a BSS Soundweb London BLU-100 signal processor, which can be configured to function independently in each room, or as a single time-aligned system when the rooms are combined. Finally, BSS Contrio EC-8BV wall controllers enable intuitive source selection and volume control in each room, while HARMAN’s HiQnet protocol allows the entire system to be controlled with any WiFi-equipped device.
“We’re pleased to be involved with the audio installation in Australian High Commission’s event space,” said Matt Chapman, Managing Director, Audio Workshop. “We strive to understand our clients’ needs and provide them with robust solutions that satisfy their current requirements and leave plenty of room for future expansion. We’re thrilled to see the HARMAN system has accomplished the AHC’s goals and surpassed their expectations.”
“It is a great privilege to be associated with the Australian High Commission in Wellington,” said Ramesh Jayaraman, VP & GM, HARMAN Professional Solutions, APAC. “Our solutions are widely used throughout government facilities for their ease of use, high security standards and best-in-class technology. We thank Audio Workshop for their expert consultation, and JANDS NZ and for their dedication to customer service and faith in HARMAN products.”
TechData Co. enhances exhibitions with JBL Professional and BSS solutions to provide balanced coverage and clarity in a wide range of interior environments
GOYANG, South Korea—TechData Co. recently installed a complete audio system by HARMAN Professional Solutions at the Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang Experience Center.
Based in Ulsan, South Korea, Hyundai Motor Company operates the world’s largest integrated automobile manufacturing facility, with vehicles sold in 193 countries and more than 175,000 employees worldwide. As part of Hyundai’s vision of providing customers with a lifetime of enriched driving experiences, the automaker opened the first Hyundai Motorstudio in Seoul in 2014, followed by locations in Moscow and Hanam, South Korea. In 2017, Hyundai opened Motorstudio Goyang, the largest automobile brand experience center in South Korea. Designed by Austria’s world-renowned architecture firm DMAA, Motorstudio Goyang features cutting-edge architecture and unique exhibitions that showcase Hyundai’s latest technology and unique company culture.
The facility’s exhibition spaces were designed by Atelier Bruckner, and are at the center of the Motorstudio Goyang experience. To ensure an immersive media experience for visitors, Hyundai hired Klangerfinder & Idee und Klang to create a unique sound design for the exhibition space, complemented by media hardware designed by Medienprojekt P2. Audio integrator TechData Co. was hired to bring the audio design to life, and ensure the system could deliver excellent sound quality and properly balanced coverage. In order to meet these requirements, TechData selected a complete HARMAN audio system made up of JBL Professional and BSS solutions.
“The Hyundai Motorstudio experience center is our way of communicating with our customers, enabling us to engage with them through the various experiences within the facility,” said Yeonhee Lee, Director, Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang. “It is imperative that visitors have a seamless experience that targets all their senses. We are delighted that the HARMAN system has enabled us to achieve our goals, and we are especially pleased with the dedication and strong support of TechData.”
“The challenge was creating a balance between the look and feel of the space, and the technologies that create the experience,” said SJ Rhee, TechData Co. “We collaborated with local architectural sound experts to provide consultation regarding system design. We had to show proof of concept and demonstrate proper playback of Klangerfinder & Idee und Klang’s audio designs to ensure the intended audio experience was achieved. The process started in 2014 and we were awarded the job in October 2015, with the commissioning and installation of the system in April 2017.”
In order to ensure optimum audio coverage and clarity in the facility’s main exhibition space, TechData installed a range of JBL speakers. JBL PD6000, PD500, CBT, AE and AE Compact Series speakers are installed throughout the space to deliver consistent level and high output, with low frequency support provided by ASB6112 and ASB6128V subwoofers. TechData also installed CBT Series column loudspeakers, which utilize analog delay beam-forming and amplitude tapering to accomplish consistent vertical coverage, without the narrow vertical beaming and out-of-coverage lobing that is typical of straight form-factor passive column speakers.
“On our part, the challenge was implementing proper audio coverage at the correct levels, taking into consideration the interior layout and design as well as the overall environment and materials used,” continued SJ Rhee. “The different JBL speaker models in the exhibition space helped us to ensure consistent coverage with the right levels for a pleasing experience. Having a range of speakers with different configurations and coverage patterns helped us achieve Hyundai’s objectives. We are pleased to say that we managed to successfully design and install the HARMAN system without any compromise in quality.”
In addition to the exhibition space, TechData installed speakers in other areas throughout the facility, including Control 26CT speakers in the restaurant and weather-resistant Control 88M landscape speakers in the fourth floor terrace. The diverse array of solutions in the JBL Control Contractor Series enabled TechData to provide aesthetically matching in-ceiling and surface-mount speakers in the cafeteria, elevator lobby, driving registration and restroom areas. EON600 Series speakers extend the audio experience outside the building and into the parking lot. TechData also installed a BSS Soundweb Contrio EC-4BV for advanced volume control and source selection.
“One of the highlights is the 4D room, where visitors can experience off-road racing in a rally car that makes them feel like they are in an amusement park, with HARMAN audio providing the soundtrack,” said Kyoo Hong Min, Account Manager, TechData
“It is a great privilege to be associated with one of South Korea’s iconic companies at Hyundai Motorstudio in Goyang,” said Ramesh Jayaraman, VP & GM, HARMAN Professional Solutions, APAC. “HARMAN’s JBL and BSS brands elevate the audio experiences of visitors by bringing out the finer sounds from the factory floor to the exhibition floor. We thank TechData for being involved in every step of creating the experience center, showing commitment and dedication to ensure that only the best solution and result was achieved.”
Sky-Skan, Inc. deploys a complete HARMAN solution to create an immersive experience in the museum’s new state-of-the-art fulldome Frost Planetarium
MIAMI—Sky-Skan, Inc. recently installed a complete audio solution by HARMAN Professional Solutions at the newly opened Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science. As the world’s leading designer and installer of fulldome planetariums and visualization theaters, Sky-Skan created a design that features an 8K 3D projection system with specialized Christie Digital projectors that deliver 30,000 lumens of brightness, making it one of the brightest projection systems on the planet.
To complement such a remarkable video system, Sky-Skan needed to design a high-fidelity audio solution capable of delivering crisp, powerful and natural-sounding audio. After careful consideration, Sky-Skan designed and installed an integrated HARMAN solution made up of JBL Professional CSX F35 loudspeakers, Crown power amplifiers, BSS Soundweb London signal processors and AKG microphones. The design also features Martin wash lights and Martin system controllers that control both the audio and lighting systems.
“We were confident that the HARMAN solution would cover the museum’s needs and exceed their expectations, without breaking the bank,” said George Barnett, Project Director at Sky-Skan, Inc. “The HARMAN teams have been so good to work with, and the integration between products is really smooth. Because of the communication between HARMAN brands like BSS and Martin, we were able to solve any issues quickly and efficiently. It makes life a lot easier when you have a one-stop shop that can pretty much cover all the bases—especially when you’re trying to integrate a system together with so many different components.”
The HARMAN audio solution includes 12 JBL CSX F35/90 loudspeakers, 4 JBL 5628 subwoofers, Crown DriveCore Install and I-Tech HD Series amplifiers, and BSS Soundweb London BLU-806, BLU-100, BLU-USB and BLU-120 signal processors. The system is controlled by Martin M-Play, M-Touch and M2PC control surfaces with Martin M-PC controller software. Sky-Skan also created a custom software interface that enables the Martin control surfaces to control audio from the BSS processors and the house Lutron lighting system. AKG WMS470 wireless microphone systems and presenter sets are used by special event hosts and projector operators.
While every component of the system is important, the JBL CSX F35 loudspeakers play a critical role in the planetarium. Before Sky-Skan signed on to the project, the museum’s technical team had initially spec’d another speaker brand for the design, but the cost was extremely prohibitive for the rest of the project. Barnett began looking for a speaker that could deliver the highest quality audio, while remaining within budget. Barnett travelled to JBL Professional’s headquarters in California to test the CSX F35 loudspeakers in person. At that point, he knew he had found the perfect speaker for the Frost Planetarium.
“At the time, there wasn’t much information available on the CSX F35 loudspeakers,” explained Barnett. “Once I stopped by JBL to hear the speakers, I fell in love immediately. There’s a significant improvement with the D2 Dual Driver technology. They’re smooth as silk all the way through the frequencies, including 4K and the high end. We didn’t have to compensate or use additional processing—the EQ curves were nearly flat. They’re pretty amazing.”
“We’re trying to create an illusion in the theater—whether it’s taking you out to the edge of a galaxy or exploring the inside of a cell,” concluded Barnett. “A lot of times, the audio is overlooked in planetarium design—but it’s an important storytelling tool. For example, there’s obviously not any sound in space, but sound designers can use audio to create a feeling of moving through space. The HARMAN audio solution is able to reproduce those sounds as naturally as possible, which makes the audience feel like they’re on a real journey.”
Compact Monitor Systems selects solutions by JBL Professional, Crown and BSS to create a complete multi-zone audio system at Australia’s first connected gym
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA—Compact Monitor Systems recently installed a complete networked audio system by HARMAN Professional Solutions at Fitness First Barangaroo.
With more than 360 locations worldwide, Fitness First is the largest privately owned health club in the world. Fitness First opened Australia’s first “connected gym” in 2017 as part of the renowned Barangaroo urban renewal project. Located in Tower One, the largest office tower in Australia, Fitness First Barangaroo provides a holistic exercise experience with the latest innovations in technology to its members. Covering an area of almost 13,000 square feet, its facilities consist of a weightlifting gym, freestyle gym and group fitness studio. In order to deliver inspiring audio content with exceptional clarity to its members in multiple zones throughout the entire facility, Fitness First hired Compact Monitor Systems to install a complete networked audio system by HARMAN Professional Solutions.
“Music makes or breaks the vibe of any gym,” said Anna Burdekin, Club Manager, Fitness First Barangaroo. “You can have great staff and members, but the vibe will be absolutely lost if you don’t have great audio. Our members come straight from very high-pressure jobs, and a pleasant audio experience helps them switch out of work mode and get in the zone from the moment they arrive. I’ve worked in clubs where audio coverage is uneven in the group fitness areas. Compact Monitor Systems has managed to get highly balanced sound throughout the room—at a good volume. The music is absolutely pumping when we have classes in the group exercise studio. With the way the system is integrated, you don’t even notice the speakers in the studio—it’s brilliant!”
To provide Fitness First Barangaroo’s members with a clear and unobtrusive audio experience, Compact Monitor Systems’ Bill Richardson designed and integrated a multi-zone audio system into the fitness center’s architectural features. The networked HARMAN system installed by Compact Monitor Systems consists of JBL Professional speakers, Crown amplifiers and BSS processors.
“When people go to the gym, they expect high quality audio—especially in a Titanium Club,” said Bill Richardson, Managing Director, Compact Monitor Systems. “We used JBL Control 24 in-ceiling loudspeakers in spaces like the hallways and bathrooms. In the majority of the gym we used Control 60 subs and Control 67 full-range pendant loudspeakers. We hung the pendants above the light fixtures, so you don’t notice the loudspeakers visually—you simply hear them when you walk into the space.”
JBL Contractor Control Series loudspeakers offer integrators a complete range of solutions for any form factor or requirement. JBL Control 67 P/T full-range speakers and Control 60 subwoofers are suspended above the light fixtures in the three main gyms, providing balanced audio coverage across the large spaces. JBL Control 24C compact in-ceiling loudspeakers deliver full quality sound to the reception area, bathrooms and hallways. The multi-zone system is powered by Crown CDi Series amplifiers and networked via BSS Soundweb London BLU signal processors, enabling intuitive volume control and source selection in each zone.
“HARMAN Professional Solutions is pleased to deliver a higher and deeper sonic experience at Fitness First Barangaroo,” said Ramesh Jayaraman, VP & GM, HARMAN Professional Solutions, APAC. “We look forward to building our relationship with Fitness First, and thank our partners Compact Monitor Systems for providing premium solutions with great customer service.”
