Fixed Installations require the ability for Consultants and Contractors to fully adjust and set-up individual devices, whilst maintaining the highest security from unauthorised adjustment, while touring sound users require more centralised control of numerous processors . Soundbench V3 controls FDS-355, FDS-366, FDS-380/388 and FCS-920/926 devices.

To assist system designers to use VARICURVE and OMNIDRIVE units in such installations, BSS Audio has developed the SOUNDBENCH software, which can be used on virtually any PC (for example a portable laptop computer, running WINDOWS to control these devices. This provides an elegant, portable and easy-to use graphical interface. Users can adjust parameters such as frequency, gain, Q, crossover points, delay etc, by entering numerical values or using the nudge buttons, and by 'dragging' the curves directly on screen using the mouse. Other functions such as memory store and recall are also provided.

For example, a system of FCS-92O VARICURVE CLIENT and/or FDS-38O OMNIDRIVE INSTALL devices (which have no front panel controls) may be installed and set-up with a portable PC, then when the PC is removed no unauthorised personnel have access to change the EQ settings.

The PC communicates with the units through either a MIDI loop or serial interface to an FDS-366 or FDS-355. The Soundbench software is supplied on CD, and will run on colour or monochrome screens, and under either Windows 3.11 or Windows 95/98 operating systems. Soundbench does not run on 32-bit operating systems such as Windows NT or Windows 2000.

Whilst configuring and changing device parameters, the MIDI NETWORK MANAGER is continuously polling the on-line devices and checking the network state.

It is also possible to use SOUNDBENCH off-line, and set up EQ curves or OMNIDRIVE programs, and then restore these settings to devices on-line later. This obviously gives the Consultant the opportunity to make system changes in his office, and spend less time on-site updating the devices. As an example, a disk could be provided (or data e-mailed) to the site for uploading onto a local PC, without a site visit being necessary.

Once all the devices have been configured, they can be stored in the device memories. On a VARICURVE unit, this can be any one of 50 internal memories, while an OMNIDRIVE unit has 60 such stores available.

This obviously gives archiving possibilities through the computer memory, but SOUNDBENCH also has the standard CUT & PASTE facilities which provide a means of copying data not only between different units, but also into word-processor documents as system engineering references.
